Which solvent ink is right for your printer?
Solvent ink is made for PVC and flex media. True solvent printing ink bites deep into the material, so prints survive sun and rain for years. Eco solvent ink is a milder version for indoor-outdoor vinyl. UV ink is a different chemistry for rigid boards. Match the ink to your printer head and your jobs.
| Your printing work | Best ink |
|---|---|
| Outdoor flex, hoardings, long banner runs | True solvent ink |
| Vinyl posters, stickers, car graphics | Eco solvent ink |
| Boards, glass, acrylic, rigid media | UV ink |
True solvent ink
Strongest outdoor life for flex and hoardings.
Eco solvent ink
Mild smell for vinyl posters and stickers.
UV ink
Instant cure on boards and rigid media.
What Is Solvent Ink and How Does It Work?
How the chemistry works
Solvent ink is pigment carried in a petroleum-based solvent. When the printer fires a droplet, the solvent bites into the PVC surface of the flex or vinyl. The heater then evaporates the carrier, and the pigment stays locked inside the material. That bond is why a flex banner printed with solvent ink does not fade or peel in the monsoon.
- Pigment-based colour with strong UV resistance
- Waterproof once fully dry, no lamination needed for flex
- Dries with the printer heater, so prints come off ready to finish
- Low cost per square foot on long production runs
One thing to plan for: true solvent ink has a strong smell. The print room needs cross ventilation, and ink drums should stay closed when not in use.
Best for: flex banners, hoardings, and outdoor advertising where print life matters more than smell.
Types of Solvent Ink: True Solvent vs Mild Solvent vs Eco Solvent
The solvent ink family
All solvent inks share the same idea: pigment plus a solvent carrier. The difference is how strong that carrier is. Stronger carriers bond better outdoors but smell more. Milder carriers smell less but need lamination for long outdoor life.
- True solvent ink (hard solvent): maximum bite and outdoor life. Built for Konica and similar production heads on flex machines. Needs ventilation.
- Mild solvent ink: a middle ground with less smell, still good outdoor life. Common on older wide format machines.
- Eco solvent ink: the mildest version, made from glycol ether carriers. Low smell, prints on vinyl, one-way vision, and wallpaper. Needs lamination for 3 to 5 year outdoor work.
Do not mix families in one machine. Ink lines, dampers, and cleaning fluid are matched to the chemistry. Flushing properly takes time and ink, so pick the right solvent ink from day one.
Best for: true solvent for outdoor flex volume, eco solvent for daily vinyl work in a shop.
Solvent Ink for Flex Printing and Outdoor Banners
Why flex shops stay with solvent
Flex printing is a volume game. Shops run hundreds of square feet a day, and the ink is one of the biggest running costs. Solvent ink keeps that cost low, dries fast on the heater, and holds colour on star flex and backlit flex without a laminator.
- Good: outdoor life of 1 to 3 years on flex, often longer in shade
- Good: fast production speed with Konica-class production heads
- Limit: strong smell, so the room needs airflow and fans
- Limit: prints need 24 hours to fully cure before tight rolling
Ink consumption: a normal flex job uses roughly 8 to 12 ml of solvent ink per square foot including purge and test prints. Bulk packs of 1 litre or 5 litres keep the cost per square foot down.
Best for: banner shops, hoarding printers, and outdoor advertising production.
Solvent ink and printhead compatibility
This is the most important check before you buy solvent ink. A head built for mild ink will clog or corrode on true solvent. Match the ink to the head, and match the cleaning fluid too.
| Printhead | Ink it takes | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Konica 512i / 1024i | True solvent, production volume | Flex printing machines |
| Seiko, Spectra | True and mild solvent | Older wide format machines |
| Epson DX5 / XP600 / i3200 | Eco solvent ink only | Vinyl poster and sticker machines |
| Ricoh | Eco solvent or UV | Industrial and UV machines |
Quick rules
- Epson heads never take true solvent ink. Use eco solvent ink only.
- Konica heads are built for true solvent. Eco solvent runs weak on them.
- Always use the matching cleaning and flushing solution from the same brand family.
- Changing ink brands on the same head? Ask the supplier for a flushing procedure first.
Best solvent ink brands available in India
You do not need ten brands. You need one solvent ink brand that matches your head, one steady supplier, and a colour profile that works. Indian shops usually pick from three groups.
| Ink group | Best when | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Original brand ink (Konica machine makers) | You want zero risk on a new machine | Matched profiles and warranty safety |
| Indian solvent ink brands | Daily flex volume at low cost | Good colour, bulk litre packs, easy stock |
| Eco solvent ink for Epson heads | Vinyl posters and stickers | Low smell, 1 litre packs, DX5/i3200/XP600 grades |
What to check before you buy
- Head grade: is the ink made for Konica, Seiko, or Epson heads specifically?
- Colour density: ask for a printed sample on your own flex before bulk purchase
- Shelf life: good solvent ink lasts 12 to 24 months sealed; ask the batch date
- Supply: a steady local stock matters more than saving a few rupees per litre
A simple start: Flex shops run true solvent ink on Konica heads. Vinyl shops run eco solvent ink on Epson heads. Keep one spare litre of each colour, and store bottles away from direct sun.
Solvent vs eco solvent vs UV ink
| Feature | Solvent | Eco solvent | UV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best job | Outdoor flex and hoardings | Vinyl posters and stickers | Boards, glass, acrylic |
| Smell | Strong | Low | Almost none |
| How it dries | Heater evaporation | Heater evaporation | Instant UV cure |
| Outdoor life | Excellent, no laminate needed | 3–5 years if laminated | Good on flat media |
| Ink cost | Lowest per sq ft | Low | Highest per ml |
| Typical heads | Konica, Seiko | Epson DX5, XP600, i3200 | Ricoh, Konica, Epson |
| Ventilation | Required | Normal room is fine | Normal room is fine |
How to choose and use solvent ink
- Start with the head. Konica and Seiko take true solvent ink. Epson heads take eco solvent ink only. Never guess on this step.
- Count your volume. Heavy daily flex runs justify bulk 5 litre packs. A new shop can start with 1 litre bottles.
- Ask for a print test. Print your own banner file, check colour density, and let it dry in the sun for a week if you can.
- Plan the room. True solvent needs airflow. Eco solvent and UV fit a normal shop.
- Store the ink right. Keep bottles sealed, upright, and away from sunlight. Shake gently before filling.
- Keep the lines clean. Use the matching cleaning fluid, run a nozzle check daily, and never let ink sit dry in a head overnight.
- Check the supplier. Batch dates, steady stock, and someone who answers the phone matter more than the price per litre.
