Which Konica printhead do you need?
Konica Minolta heads are built for true solvent ink — that is why flex printing machines use them. The Konica 512i (14 pL) is the standard flex head in India, the 1024i runs production-speed multi-head machines, and the older 512 and 256 heads still power thousands of machines on the road. Match the head version, drop size, and your machine's board before you order.

1024i
Production speed, multi-head machines.
512 & 256
Older machines, still in service.
Konica 512i Printhead — the flex printing workhorse
Why flex shops stock the 512i
The Konica 512i has 512 nozzles and a sturdy solvent-tolerant build. It fires true solvent ink all day, holds high density on star flex and backlit flex, and survives the dusty, hot conditions of banner production. Most 4-head, 6-head, and 8-head flex machines in India are built on it.
- 512i-MH (14 pL): the everyday version — high density, fast banner output
- 512i-LH (7 pL): smaller drop for finer detail and smoother gradients
- Native resolution around 360 dpi — machines stitch 2 or 4 heads for higher output quality
- Runs true solvent ink — the reason flex shops choose Konica over Epson heads
Known care points: a 512i head must never dry out. Solvent ink left overnight without purging bakes into the nozzle plate. Daily flush at closing time and a moist cap storage keep the head alive for a year or more of production.
Best for: flex printing machines running true solvent ink daily — banners, hoardings, and outdoor media.
Konica 1024i Printhead — for production flex machines
The production upgrade
The Konica 1024i carries 1024 nozzles — double the 512i — so multi-head production machines print faster with fewer heads. It uses the same version suffixes as the 512i, and the same solvent-care rules apply. Wide 8 and 10 ft flex machines run rows of 1024i heads for full-width output.
- 1024i-MH (14 pL): production solvent printing at high density
- 1024i-LH (7 pL): production speed with finer drop detail
- Higher throughput per head — fewer heads needed for the same speed
- Found in multi-head configurations on wide-format flex lines
Replacement note: in multi-head machines, heads are tuned together. When replacing one 1024i, the machine's voltage and head ID settings may need adjustment to match the rest of the row — ask your technician before fitting.
Best for: production flex lines and wide multi-head banner machines printing all day.
Konica 512 and Konica 256 Printheads — for older machines
Keeping proven machines alive
The Konica 512 (non-i) and Konica 256 built the first generation of Indian flex printing. They run slower than the i-series but remain in service across thousands of shops. Spares are still made and stocked — replacing the head is often far cheaper than replacing the machine.
- Konica 512 (42 pL): the heavy-drop version for fast, dense banner output on older machines
- Konica 512 (14 pL): finer drop for mid-range machines of its generation
- Konica 256 (30 pL): the oldest common head, 256 nozzles, still running in legacy machines
- Same solvent rules: purge daily, never let the head dry
Economics: if a machine needs its third or fourth head replacement, compare the head cost against a newer 512i-based machine — sometimes the upgrade pays for itself in speed and ink savings.
Best for: legacy flex machines that still earn daily and need an affordable head replacement.
All Konica printheads for flex and solvent printing

Konica printhead and ink compatibility
Konica heads are the opposite of Epson heads: they are built for strong solvent chemistry. The version suffix tells you the ink the head is tuned for — match it before you fill anything.
| Head version | True solvent | Mild / eco solvent | Water-based |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512i-MH / 1024i-MH | Yes | Yes | No |
| 512i-LH / 1024i-LH | Yes | Yes | No |
| 512i-MN / LN (aqueous) | No | No | Yes |
| Konica 512 (solvent) | Yes | Mild only | No |
| Konica 256 | Yes | Mild only | No |
Quick rules
- The suffix decides the ink: MH and LH take solvent inks, MN and LN take water-based inks. They are not interchangeable.
- Konica heads do not run DTF ink or DTG ink — those belong to Epson heads.
- UV-specific Konica versions exist for some machines; confirm the exact variant with your supplier.
- Always use matched solvent cleaning fluid and purge at day end — dried solvent ink is the top head killer.
Original vs compatible Konica printheads
| Feature | Original Konica head | Compatible / second-hand |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle test out of the box | Clean, all nozzles firing | Varies — often weak channels |
| Head life | Full expected lifespan | Unknown hours already used |
| Voltage behaviour | Within machine's tuned range | Often needs voltage adjustment |
| Warranty | Supplier-backed replacement | Usually none |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Production machines earning daily | Backup, low-risk testing |
What to check before you buy
- Sealed Konica Minolta packaging with intact serial and protective film
- A live nozzle test before payment — any honest supplier allows this
- The exact version — MH vs LH vs MN, 512i vs 1024i, 42 pL vs 14 pL for the 512
- Matching adapter boards, cables, and dampers for your machine model
- Technician support for head ID and voltage setup after fitting
A practical rule: Konica heads are among the most copied parts in the market. A production flex machine should run original heads — one cloned head that drops nozzles mid-job costs more in wasted flex than the saving.
How to choose and fit the right Konica printhead
- Identify the exact head. Read the machine manual and the head marking — 512i or 1024i, MH or LH, and for the older 512, the 42 pL or 14 pL drop size.
- Match the ink. Solvent versions for flex work, aqueous versions only for water-based machines. Never mix chemistry.
- Buy the small parts too. Dampers, adapter boards, and cables cost little and decide whether the new head runs clean.
- Insist on a nozzle test. Fire a test pattern before paying and check every channel.
- Set up with a technician. Head ID and voltage adjustment after fitting keeps the new head within the machine's tuned range — especially important in multi-head rows.
- Purge daily. Flush solvent through the head at closing time and leave it capped moist. A dried Konica head is usually a dead Konica head.
- Buy from a source that supports. Sealed originals, tested stock, and someone who answers setup questions matter more than the lowest price.
